We all dream of that luscious, green blanket of grass that’s thicker than a shampoo model’s hair. If those dreams have been shattered by the disappointing and embarrassing reality of a dead and sparse lawn, we’re here to help. Spring is the prime time for overseeding, so we thought we’d share some wisdom to get your lawn back on track:
1. Choose the right seed
Because no two lawns are the same, there are a plethora of seed options to refill bare patches of grass. Be sure to read every package carefully to find the right type for your location, amount of foot traffic, shaded areas, etc.
2. Crop it short.
The first thing to do is mow the remaining grass way shorter than you normally would. The idea is to allow as much possible contact between the new seed and the ground, which would not be possible with tall sprigs of grass.
3. Rake and aerate.
On a similar note, overseeding won’t do much good if there’s also a thick layer of thatch covering the ground. Raking out dead patches and mixing in a thin layer of new soil is essential for everything to go smoothly.
4. Spread it all over.
Now you’re ready for the fun part. Grab a seed spreader from your local hardware store, such as Clay’s Ace Hardware or Lowe’s, and distribute the seed evenly across the region you prefer. Follow the directions on the label to ensure you’re on the right setting and spread away!
5. Keep it well-fed.
After all the seed has been laid down, cover it thoroughly with a decent layer of water to get the ball rolling. Continue to mist your lawn on a regular basis, and avoid a lot of foot traffic and mowing until it grows to the desired height.
