How to Install and Care for Sod

With Earth Day in our rearview and Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s safe to say that we have landed smack dab in the middle of sodding season. If you just moved into your dream home or your lawn could use a little TLC, then sod might just be the answer. Here are our do’s, don’ts and how-tos of sodding like a pro.

Get the Ground Ready for Sodding

Installing sod is a little more complicated than one might think – the surface needs to be smooth and clean before laying down the sod. Make sure you don’t throw it on top of rocks, weeds and other messy debris. Also, be conscious of your drainage system so that you don’t place the sod in high-puddle regions.

Install the Sod When It’s Fresh

Keeping the sod in top condition between buying and installing is absolutely essential. After you come in possession of the sod rugs, install them on previously moistened soil within 1-3 days before the rugs dry out. Place each strip in a straight line and stagger the rows like you are laying bricks.

Water, Water, WATER!!

Kind of like a needy significant other, nothing hurts sod more than neglect. Show it you care by feeding it with what may feel like an excessive amount of water. Start watering immediately after placing down the strips, and be sure to water adequately for the next two weeks to encourage root growth.

Mow After the Sod Settles

Speaking of root growth, it’s important to mow your new sod but ONLY after the roots have solidified. Of course, it can be tough to tell because it’s not like you can read your lawn’s mind. To be on the safe side, we recommend waiting about 1-2 weeks before breaking out the lawn mower. Keep the mower on the highest setting for the first time and gradually lower it each week.

Keep It Healthy with Aerification and Fertilization

After putting all this time, energy and money behind your brand new sod, it would be a shame to see it go to the dogs by next season. Once the installation is complete, get your lawn on an aerification and fertilization schedule so that it continues to look as good as the day you installed it.
