We know how it goes – you dream of a “Better Homes and Gardens”-worthy garden, but more often than not, it turns into nothing more than a pile of dirt and some bunny droppings. Keep your chin up because this year is going to be different. Follow these foolproof tips to garden like a pro this season:
1. Buddy Up
Like the rest of us, plants don’t like to be lonely. Arranging your garden items in close proximity to one another reduces moisture loss and promotes fungal diversity. All of this helps them stay healthy and grow better.
2. Plant at a Slant
Excess water and air to plants is like excess political commentary to humans: it’s just not necessary and even a little harmful. To keep extra water and cool air from settling in your garden, see about planting at a slight angle.
3. Don’t Spoil Your Soil
Choosing the right soil is half the battle. First, make sure you’re using the right kind for either a vegetable garden or a flower garden. Other factors to check on are pH levels, minerals, and clay and gravel content.
4. Get to Know Your Veggies
If you’re planting a vegetable garden, take a moment to get to know their likes, dislikes and non-negotiables. For example, tomatoes are stubborn little fellas that demand heat and shouldn’t be transferred from indoor planting to an outdoor garden until June. Radishes, however, can withstand colder temperatures, so feel free to plant them in April. It all depends on the veggie – just do your homework.
5. Protect Against Mooching Munchers
Sometimes you can do everything right – so right, in fact, that word of your fabulous garden spreads a little too quickly among the bunnies on the block. There are a couple things you can do to keep away the moochers. First, build a wooden wall around your garden. Next, line it with rabbit repellent spray or human hair (we’re not judging where you get it from…).
